What is AdBlue? Uses, Refilling & Storage

AdBlue is a diesel exhaust fluid used by vehicles with a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system. It goes into a separate, clearly marked AdBlue tank. Never put AdBlue in the diesel fuel tank.

What is AdBlue made of?

AdBlue contains 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% demineralised water. In the SCR system, it helps convert nitrogen oxides (NOx) in the exhaust into nitrogen and water vapour.

Does my vehicle need AdBlue?

Check your vehicle handbook or ask the manufacturer using your exact model and engine details. Diesel vehicles do not all use the same emissions equipment. The handbook also identifies the filler location and the fluid specification required.

Which AdBlue should I buy?

Check the pack’s ISO 22241 specification against your vehicle’s requirements. Choose a quantity you can handle comfortably and use within the storage period shown on the label. GreenChem states that its deliveries are analysed against ISO 22241 and that production batches are traceable.

For smaller refills, compare our 5L, 10L and 20L canisters. Our 2 × 10L pack supplies 20 litres in two containers.

How do I refill AdBlue?

  1. Read the vehicle handbook and pack instructions before starting.
  2. Identify the dedicated AdBlue filler. Check the recommended refill amount and avoid overfilling.
  3. Use clean, AdBlue-compatible dispensing equipment and follow the filling instructions.
  4. Replace the cap securely and deal with any spills as directed by the product instructions.

Do not dilute AdBlue or mix it with fuel or other fluids. If you put AdBlue in the fuel tank, or diesel in the AdBlue tank, do not switch on the ignition or start the engine. Seek professional assistance.

What does an AdBlue warning mean?

A low-level warning means you need to follow the vehicle’s refill instructions. Running out can lead to reduced performance or prevent the engine restarting. The refill quantity and warning-reset procedure vary by vehicle. If a warning remains after the correct refill, consult the handbook or a qualified workshop.

How should I store AdBlue?

Keep containers closed, clean and protected from direct sunlight. Use equipment intended for AdBlue to avoid contamination. Follow the pack label for the permitted storage temperature and expiry date; shelf life depends on storage conditions. A dashboard level warning does not tell you whether stored AdBlue has expired.

How much does AdBlue cost?
